Details
This 1866 Shield Nickel With Rays was certified by NGC in About Uncirculated AU58 condition. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features a Union shield representing national unity following the Civil War. The reverse displays a large numeral 5 surrounded by thirteen stars with rays positioned between the stars. The rays were removed from the design during 1867, making this an important early Shield Nickel subtype.
